How you'll make a difference

Working within the Grounds Team you will deliver horticultural grounds maintenance, critical to the efficient delivery of key grounds services. You will be responsible for the efficient and safe operation of any of the council’s fleet of agri tractors ranging up to 140hp and using a range of three point mounted or drawn implements that are commonly used to maintain amenity and highway landscapes.

We pride ourselves on our innovative approach to works and currently operate a modern fleet of agri tractors using rear mounted power arms and flail head, trailed gang mowing sets, rear mounted flails and grass collectors.  The council has also recently invested in a Trilo S4 vacuumed collector to focus on collection of grass.
 
What will you be doing?   
  • You will arrive at work by 07:30 and will carry out your daily checks before traveling to site and your tasks could be any of the following:
  • Driving an Agricultural tractor with Trimax gang mower set cutting football pitches.
  • Using the Trillo S4 to cut and collect vacuum mower to collect wildflowers.
  • Operating the Multevo Multi Hog with patch planer or brush.
  • Hedge cutting using a McConnell 5.5 m power arm.
  • Cutting grass on the main road network using a 3 meter fail.
  • Mowing a 40 degree embankment with the Flailbot remote mowing system.
  • In winter months you may also be required to operate a tractor mounted salt spreading equipment outside normal working hours.
  • During the day you will record activities and report on progress and also use your skills to carryout operator repairs and maintenance.
  • As well as operating machinery you may from time to time be required to undertake associated duties, which may include strimming, general grass cutting or other types of manual labour.
  • You will need to have a flexible approach, thorough in your work and able to pay attention to detail and the surroundings. You will also be responsible for the safe use of machines and tools.
  • Depending on duties, weekend or night works may be involved, for which the appropriate enhancement will be paid.

What we need from you

  • It is essential that you are able to demonstrate both experience and the understanding of the complexities of safely operating agri tractors and/or heavy plant and hold an appropriate accreditation.
  • You will be competent in operating a rear mounted power arm with flail head to use for hedge cutting and verge management and also be able to understand and follow work programmes including reading maps and completing records.
  • You may have substantial experience in a similar role or be able to demonstrate experience using heavy plant of a similar size including an aptitude for carrying out routine operator maintenance.
  • It is essential that you have an understanding of the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 with a strong knowledge and a practical understanding of using heavy plant in a working environment and competence in the use and care of all equipment used in amenity grounds maintenance.
  • You will have experience of leading small teams working to tight schedules.
  • You must have experience in operating large tractors and or large operated plant.
