How you'll make a difference

Working as a Street Cleansing Operative, you will be part of a  vital front-line team carrying out street cleansing duties to  ensure our region is litter and waste free.
 
You will enjoy the outdoors and do not mind working in all weathers or in unpleasant environments in this varied role, using appropriate tools, plant, equipment and vehicles to give good customer service.
 
What will you be doing?
 
  • Your day will be varied, carrying out street cleansing duties including:
    • litter picking
    • litter bin emptying
    • dog waste bin emptying
    • pedestrian footpath mechanical sweeping and hand sweeping
    • clear detritus and autumn leaf fall
    • collect fly tips
    • remove bulky waste from households
    • clean public conveniences
  • It will be important for you to meet a good standard of service, using the appropriate tools, plant, equipment and vehicles and deciding the best method of disposal within regulations.
  • Working as a team you will provide cyclical litter clearance to high speed roads working within dedicated traffic management and dispose of all other waste and other items including snow and ice.
  • You will assist in the application of pesticides to control weed growth and remove graffiti and fly posters by using specialist equipment to apply clearing chemicals.
  • Most of all you will enjoy working outdoors in varied surroundings such as grass verges, footpaths, cycleways, roadways, commercial buildings, council offices and facilities.
  • Depending on duties, weekend and night-time work may be involved, for which an enhancement will be paid.

What we need from you

  • You will require a full driving licence to at least category B for manual transmission vehicles and be competent to drive vehicles up to maximum 3500kg MAM.
  • It is essential that you are physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weathers through the year.
  • You will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and be able to comply with any departmental safety standards.
  • You will be able to understand and follow written works instructions, read maps and complete paper records.
  • We are looking for self-motivated people able to work to deadlines and timescales and on use your own initiative with little supervision and able to demonstrate a flexible approach to work
  • You are happy to deal with both members of the public and colleagues in a courteous and helpful manner.
