How you'll make a difference

We are looking for a creative writer who can help us tell the story of the wide breadth of services the council provides from bin collections and fixing potholes to building new schools and major transport projects. 

You will make a difference by using your excellent copy writing and content production skills to put people at ease so you can collect powerful and emotive stories and develop the best content that supports our residents and enhances our reputation.

You will lead on researching and writing compelling and engaging content which will not only inform our residents about the services they use but also develop a narrative to promote the innovation, quality and value for money aspects of our work. Your content will be used in multichannel and integrated campaigns.  

The role is based at our Yate offices, however the team are currently hybrid working, mixture of working remotely at home and working in the office.

What will you be doing?

  • You will write and produce a wide range of high-quality content including newsletters, press releases, social media, case studies, project summaries, blogs and other written material.
  • You will manage a story pipeline to reflect organisational need and priorities, building strong relationships with internal teams.
  • You will research, source, interview and write up stories from a wide range of subjects that enhance the council’s reputation.
  • You will manage consent processes with story subjects, ensuring compliance with GDPR, consent and safeguarding policies and best practice.
  • You will follow and continue to review and update the corporate writing guidelines to reflect the council’s communications style and tone of voice.
  • You will undertake campaign measurement and evaluation, against agreed communications objectives and strategy, as required.

What we need from you

  • You will have excellent experience in copy writing and content production or similar.
  • You will have strong communications and story gathering experience, used to working in a multichannel and integrated communications environment that includes media.
  • You will understand interview techniques to make subjects feel relaxed and draw out compelling stories.
  • You will understand the media and channel landscape and of how different stories and content work across different communication channels.
  • You will have excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • You will be confident in problem solving and able to work in a team with the ability to respond positively and rapidly in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
  • You will have the ability to work at pace and under pressure to meet challenging deadlines and handle competing priorities.
  • You will have good IT skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint and ideally Office365.
