How you'll make a difference

You will make a difference as a Bikeability Coordinator by organising the delivery of the Bikeability Scheme and promoting cycling and cycle training to all areas of the community.
The Bikeability scheme, primarily for children and young people, gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling and covers 3 levels:
  • Level 1 - riders master cycle handling skills in traffic-free environments.
  • Level 2 – riders develop their skills and confidence to cycle on single-lane roads and simple junctions with light-moderate traffic.
  • Level 3 – riders tackle busier/ or faster roads, and complex junctions.

You will be based at Badminton Road, Yate but most of your work will take place outdoors.
What will you be doing?

  • It will be your responsibility to ensure that the quality of training by the Bikeability instructors is maintained at a high level and that there is a commonality in the style of teaching.
  • You will deliver Bikeability Cycle Training at all three levels to school children throughout the South Gloucestershire area and at times you will need to travel some distance to your next location. You will also need to be able to physically handle bicycles for inspection or minor repairs.
  • You will deliver adult cycle training, as and when necessary.
  • You will act as a bridge between the instructors and the Operations Manager to attempt to resolve issues in the field, such as training and mentor instructors, carry out one to one meetings, arrange annual leave and sickness reporting, conduct return to work interviews, support recruitment and allocate work.
  • On occasions, you will attend public road safety and Bikeability events as required to promote cycling and cycling training to all areas of the community, presenting in school assemblies.

What we need from you

  • You will need to hold a relevant qualification e.g. NVQ 2 or equivalent, or similar specifically national accreditation such as a Bikeability instructor or hold an Instructor qualification/ train the trainer or equivalent qualification.
  • It is essential that you have experience of working in a similar area e.g. cycle skills.
  • You will need to be able to cycle with pupils, at times over some distance, and be able to physically handle bicycles for inspection or minor repairs.
  • You will demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and codes of practice relating to cycling and road safety, and practical skills in the use of bicycles.
  • You will be able to assess training needs for cycling, and address these through standard Bikeability training and advice.
  • You will have good planning and organisational skills to maintain accurate records and be able to prioritise and handle a range of tasks at any one time.
  • You will be a proficient communicator to effectively communicate with your manager, Bikeability trainers and service users and be able to promote Bikeability courses within schools.
  • You will have some experience of allocating tasks and the ability to work unsupervised and make operational decision in the absence of the Operations Manager.

Please note that due to the nature of this role it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post.
