We are determined that South Gloucestershire will be a great place to live and work.  Our Planning Service comprises of three main elements: Development Management, Major Sites and Strategic Planning Policy and Specialist Advice, who work strongly together to deliver a one-service joined-up approach for our customers.

Working in the Strategic Planning Policy and Specialist Advice team you'll make a difference providing advice to support the council’s development management and plan making statutory responsibilities in relation to matters of landscape character and management.

 
We have two limited term contracts until May 2025, one is full-time (37hrs), the second is part-time (18.5 hrs) per week.  
 
 
What you will be doing? 

Under
the day-to-day supervision of the Principal Landscape Officer:
 
  • You will give landscape advice to development management case officers to support the timely and effective determination of planning applications. This will include site visits as required and liaison with other specialist officers.
  • Using your experience and knowledge, you will provide landscape advice to contribute on landscape and visual impact assessments, EIA screening. pre-applications advice, and assistance in planning enforcement matters relating to landscape issues.
  • When required you will support the development of our new Local Plan policy, strategy and guidance formulation which has implications for landscape character and management.
  • You will contribute to the development and maintenance of GIS mapping databases and monitoring systems relating to the natural environment.
  • You may be required to assist in the preparation of written appeal statements and attend committee meetings.  
  • You are responsible for providing information and advice, including answering requests for information from other departments, outside organisations, and the public, and to represent the department on appropriate working groups.

What we need from you

  • Educated to degree/diploma level in Landscape Architecture or other relevant discipline.
  • You will be a member (including student member) of the Landscape Institute.
  • Some relevant experience and or knowledge of the development management procedures, the planning system and legislation, and current landscape Institute guidance. In particular, Landscape & Visual Impact assessment, hard landscape design, good plant knowledge (British flora) and site implementation experience.
  • Excellent verbal, problem solving, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience of GIS mapping systems or similar mapping systems.

You will be expected to travel throughout the authority and surrounding area so must have a full valid driving licence with regular access to a vehicle or have alternative appropriate means of travel.
