How you'll make a difference

Improvement isn’t an open and shut exercise.  As our Children’s Improvement Partner you will directly impact the ongoing development and continuous improvement of our children’s services. You will support and safeguard some of the most vulnerable children and young people in South Gloucestershire to ensure they have the best start in their lives.

You will have a direct impact on the work in the Children’s Social Care Improvement Plan, providing professional expertise to ensure high quality social work practice across the council.

We are currently recruiting to two positions.

What will you be doing?
  •  It will be your responsibility to support, champion and challenge professional practice and judgement in casework, ensuring a systemic approach is deployed.
  •  You will provide individual guidance and evaluate cases and individual pieces of work to ensure desired outcomes for children, young people and families. This requires significant degree of forward planning, as well as managing immediate day to day issues and prioritisation of those issues that require an immediate response
  • You will role model best practice and maintain knowledge of leading-edge best practice through research, review and personal development.
  • You will support the continuous development of service staff within the professional development framework of South Gloucestershire’s Children’s Social Care and national social care professional development frameworks.
  •  You will also provide a range of development strategies including mentoring, coaching and group training.
  • Your contribution will be key to the delivery and implementation of the overarching strategy, social work core standards, thresholds and practice and quality assurance framework of South Gloucestershire’s Children's Social Care Services.  This will ensure that the Service actively plans for safety, permanency and stability for children and young people regardless of the setting in which they live, while actively supports more children to live at home safely.
  • When required you will lead, manage and oversee the work of a specific team or service, to ensure that vulnerable children are protected from significant harm, to work with children where there is risk of family breakdown, as well as working with children in care.
  • You will be required to ensure consistency of cover for Team Managers in specific statutory service areas where there is improvement focus or indeed long-term sickness and/or continued vacancies.

These posts are offered on a limited term contract basis, due to conclude 31st March 2026

What we need from you

  • You will be a qualified social worker with relevant registration to practice and a strong understanding of relevant national and regional policy, and legislation.
  • You will be able to demonstrate extensive experience working in, and leading, across various teams and services within children’s services.
  • You will have a proven knowledge of the Ofsted inspection framework, Signs of Safety and system social work practice.
  • Know what good practice looks like and understand the impact of practice on those children and young people we support, protect and care for.
  • You will be able to develop and maintain complex partnerships.
  • You will demonstrate financial and commercial acumen, with experience of managing budgets.
  • You will be experienced in influencing, stakeholder management skills and the ability to build relationships.
Please note that due to the nature of this role it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post.

You will be required to travel widely to a range of locations within the Authority so you must have a current driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle insured for business use.
